True Dog Stories: A dog travelled 4000km to reunite with family

Since ages it has been known that dog is a man’s best friend. And this statement is not based on just some assumptions but has been concluded and derived from solid facts. There have been tons of faithful dog stories where the four-legged animal, while continuously wagging its tail, has not only shown its loyalty and affection towards humans but has proved it too. And this is one such lost dog story.

Dogs are known to have a heightened sense of smell which helps them in remembering people and different paths. They have 224 million more receptors in their nose than compared to a mere 6 million in any healthy human being. This is one reason that dogs are a part of army, police and several other security armadas. But there was this one dog born in 1921, a Scottish Collie, named Bobbie who was an untrained ball of fur and yet shocked the whole world with his inspiring journey. He wasn’t any trained army dog but a backyard puppy, residing in the town of Oregon in US, for kids to play with. But his story isn’t that of a normal canine.

Bobbie was owned by the Brazier family living in Silverton, Oregon. Frank and Elizabeth Brazier along with their two daughters Leona and Nova were very happy to have Bobbie as a new member of their family. Everything was going pretty well for them until a road trip that they took in August, 1923. Along with Bobbie, the Brazier family went on a road trip to Indiana to meet their relatives. It was on that trip where Bobbie was left stranded. He was attacked by three other dogs due to which he ran away. The family was under shock by the turn of events and initiated a search to find their two-year-old‘Bob’, but failed to do so. Drained of all hope, the Brazier family returned to Oregon broken-heartedly thinking that they’d never see their dog again. But who knew, that Bobbie hadn’t lost all hope yet.

This embarked the journey of a two year old dog that traversed through rivers, mountains, plains and whatnot to reunite with his family. He didn’t have any other force driving him but just the affection for his owners which made him do the undoable. During his journey, he travelled a total of at least 4,105km, in which he crossed all the tough terrains including mountains and rivers. He did his journey during the coldest part of winters.

And after 6 months of reckless trekking, Bobbie finally reached home with gashed paws, and his irritated skin was profusely defining his harsh journey. He travelled almost 23km daily without a break, for straight six months. What drove him? Why was he so determined? All these questions popped up in the minds of several people who were shocked to see a two-year-old Scottish Collie surpass death in order to return his home. As soon as his story reached a few ears, Bobbie turned into a national sensation overnight headlining every leading newspaper.

He received a lot of praise from all around the world. Bobbie also starred as a lead in a silent film named “A Call from the West” depicting his journey. Hundreds of letters were sent to him and he was also honoured with a jewel studded harness and collar. People who had fed and helped Bobbie along his 6 month long journey, posted letters and wrote articles about their time with him. Using these stories the Humane Society of Portland assembled an accurate description of the route that Bobbie took. Not finding his owners at Indiana, he struck out in several directions, apparently seeking their scent. After which, he eventually headed west. Bobbie visited each stop where the Brazier family had stopped during their trip to Indiana. Even after 90 years, Bobbie remains a national sensation and his loyalty is celebrated annually as Silverton’s annual children’s pet parade.

After reuniting with his owners, Bobbie spent four healthy years before dying a natural death in the year of 1927. He was buried with honours at the Oregon Humane Society’s pet cemetery in Portland. The story of Bobbie still manages to touch the heart of millions of people and very well depicts the role a dog plays in people’s lives. Bobbie has been given many names and honours; his story has reached out to people in different forms and languages but one thing remains common in all of the stories and that is dogs are not just four legged creatures wagging their tails for a treat, but beings with emotions so great that their loyalty and love can never be measured and to what extent can they go for their loved ones can never be determined.

So, if you’re in need of unconditional love then you’re in need of a pup.
