Saint Bernard is a courageous royal dog, known around the world for its valor. So if you want a dog to get yourself attention than you must go for Saint Bernard. When you first look at this dog you may be taken over by its huge size, but the character and soul of these dogs is always gentle. Saint Bernard’s were the original high adventure avalanche rescue dogs as they have great desire and instinct to actually seek out, search and find people. This breed is natural born pathfinders with a superior sense of smell and according to legends they can smell a person buried under 20 feet of snow.  Their long strong feet and arched paws help them to walk through snow and digging.

History & Origin:


Saint Bernard’s are believed to be the descendents from the Mastiff family. This heroic breed first found it’s calling at a monastery-hospice in the Swiss Alps in the year 1050. The monastery was established by Augustine monk named St. Bernard de Menthon as a safe haven for travelers and trekkers crossing the treacherous mountain pass in winter. It was until the 1700, the dogs were first used at the hospice. The monks soon discovered that these dogs had some gifts that are above and beyond, not only they could sense avalanche approaching but they also have mysterious ability find victims lost in the snow. And it is believed that over the period of two hundred years Saint Bernard have the lives of over 2000 people. Saint Bernard made their way into England in the mid-1800, while it was registered by the American Kennel Club in 1885.

Colors:


Saint Bernard breed comes in two coat types: longhaired or shorthaired. The coat colors include red and white, brown and white, and brindle and white. Some dogs also have dark masks over their eyes.

Training:


Saint Bernard is a true gentle giant, but like all large breed dogs, they must be well socialized with people and other pets in the family in order to prevent anxiety and any other possible aggression or territorial behavior. Training from the early age is the way to go for Saint Bernard, as the breed is eager to please, which can make training easier than with other breeds. However, you need to be patient with puppies during training, as they would like to test boundaries like teenagers to see what they can get away with and have little regard for the rules you put in place. 

Living Environment:


Saint Bernard dog breed fair better in a cold environment, so if you live in warm and humid places do not adopt one. They are not suited for apartment lifestyle due to their large size and weight between 100-200 pounds.

Health:  


As far as the health is concerned Saint Bernard dog breed is generally healthy. However, due to the exceptionally speedy growth and weight of Saint Bernard, the breed can suffer from deterioration of the bones causing hip or elbow dysplasia. They can also suffer from painful growth spurts, joints and heart problems.

Grooming:


Irrespective of short or long hair coat, Saint Bernard need moderate amount of grooming. The breed have very oily and water resistant coat, so it is advised not to over bathe them as it may take away this natural oil from their hair. Brushing their coat on a weekly basis would save you from unwanted hairs on your carpet and couch, as the breed is a heavy shedder with frequency of twice a year.

Life Expectancy:


Saint Bernard dog breed has a life expectancy of 8-10 years.

Nicknames as “Babysitters” Saint Bernard’s are spectacular family dogs. They are very safe, gentle and tolerant with children, so with right play habits and proper training these are the best dog breed for the family.
