About Labrador Retriever Dog Breed:

Labrador retriever is one of the most versatile dog breed in the world and it is very hard not to fall in love with one. As Labrador belongs to a retriever category it has webbed paws, making them one of the strongest canine swimmers. The other characteristic of this breed is its ‘otter’ like tail which acts like a rudder in the water. Labrador’s layered and oily coat keeps them warm and dry quickly once they are out of the water. One of the traits of this breed is its soft mouth and it is believed that a well trained Labrador can carry an egg in its mouth without breaking it.

History & Origin:

Labrador retrievers are originally come from Newfoundland and during the early 1800’s   fishermen bred a smaller version of Newfoundland dog, to retrieve fishing nets and sometime the fish that fall off the hook. The Labrador’s are good swimmers, have great stamina and their strong haunches make them to leap dramatically into the water. The longest leap into the water by a Labrador is 27 feet. Labrador’s are named after Labrador Sea where these fishermen worked and also the preferred name Newfoundland was taken.

Yellow/White colored Labrador is more favored as service dogs in military or as police canines. The chocolate Labrador is the rarest of the three and also it is a misconception that chocolate colored puppies can only come through chocolate colored parents. However, in reality litter of Labrador can have any different color irrespective of their parents.

Training:

Labradors have unique ability to learn and you not need to be a well versed trainer to train them.  The owners need to put in a little effort and your Lab will do the rest. If you are looking to adopt a Lab, you need to consider that they are wonderful adult companions but as puppies they tend to bite more often due to their high energy, so it is required to teach them not to bite (or bite inhibition) from an early stage. We can say that Lab’s are easy to train and eager to please their owners.

Living Environment:

Labrador’s are sprinters and can touch the speed of 8 miles per hours in 3 second, so they need an owner which is active and can provide them a daily dose of exercise. The dog is very comfortable and adaptable to most of the living environments.

Health:

As far as the health is concerned Labrador retriever dog breed is generally healthy. However, this breed can suffer from the disorders like hip dysplasia and retina dysplasia. And as this breed loves to run they can also suffer from pain in joints.

Grooming:

Due to their short hair coat, a Labrador need moderate amount of grooming. The breed have mildly oiled and water resistant coat, so it is advised not to over bathe them as it may take away this natural oil from their hair. The breed shed twice a year and brushing their coat on a weekly basis would be more than enough.
