Argentina is famous for personalities like First Lady Eva Peron, Che Guevara and Diego Maradona. However, there is one more personality which is generally unheard of, and Argentina has erected vast number of its statues across the country.Yes !!It is Dogo Argentino, the Agentine Mastiff developed in Argentina. Bred to hunt wild boar, Dogo Argentino may be one of the most muscular canine among all the dog breeds. If Dogo can be compared to a person it would resemble to Rocky Balboa; fast, determined, muscular and brave. This breed is built like a big pickup truck and because of it’s fighting heritage, banned in countries like United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Iceland.

Dogo Argentino most distinguished characteristics is its striking white coat. This all white coat makes them visible during the hunt. The other feature of this breed is the wide curved tail providing them agility while chasing prey. They also have long elastic neck folds that slide across the muscle protecting Dogos throat, when its tangled with wild animals. Dogo Argentino also have a unique dental arch, it is square in shape creating more surface area per bite. This unique feature helps Dogo to maintain a strong grip on anything it catches.

History & Origin:


Dogos came to US in 1970s, and it is the only dog that originate from Argentina. The Dogo is revered for its ability to navigate the diverse terrain of Argentina. In 1920s,Dr. Antonio Nores Martinez, wanted to create a versatile canine. They started with fighting dog of Cordaba (now extinct) and added the Pointer, Boxer, Great Dane, Bull Terrier, Bull Dog, Irish Wolf Hound, French Mastiff, Great Pyrenees and Spanish Mastiff to achieve the final breed the Dogo Argentino. This breed development took 25 long years but in the end, the breeders had a dog which is very majestic looking and super powerful.

Training:


Dogo Argentino are trainable but lots of exercise and mental stimulation is necessary for this canine to thrive. Highly trained Dogos are also used in search and rescue, police assistance, competitive obedience and military work.

Living Environment:


Dogo needs an environment with plenty of space to run. They need routine exercise and activity to keep them stimulated. They would also do well in warm climate but over expose to sun’s heat can lead to skin diseases.Due to their high prey drive, protective instincts, and territorial nature, Dogos needs strong, high fences to keep them on their own property.

Health:


Dogo Argentinodog breed does not have many health issues commonly seen in large dog breeds. But like Dalmations, Dogo Argentino may suffer from pigment related deafness, which is a hereditary anomaly.

Grooming:


Dogo Argentino fur has satin feeling, weekly brushing is enough to maintain its short white coat.Like any other dog breed clean their ears and trim the nails as and when required.

Life Expectancy:


Dogo Argentinodog breed has a life expectancy of 10-12 years.

Is Dogo Argentino A Family Dog?


Despite Dogos intimidating look, they can be a good dog for a family. This dog breed gets along very well with other pets in the family and thrives if kept in close proximity with family members. However, this dog breed is not suitable for first time dog owner, as they need a firm and consistent guide who can keep them stimulated without using force.
