Chow Chow is one of the most beautiful and admired dog breeds in the world. They are bonafide head turner, due to their resemblance with lion and bear. Interestingly, this breed also has 44 teeth like a bear, while other dog breeds has 42 teeth.Despite of having cute and cuddling exterior, many Chows have reputation for aggression.This dog breed is known to be bit aggressive and have been reported for standoffs with kids and strangers. They are ranked one of the most dangerous dog breeds in America, and surprisingly many insurance companies do not issue insurance policy to the families who owns Chow Chow.However, a trained and socialized Chow make a wonderfully loyal companion.

Chow Chow most distinguish characteristics is its blue-black tongue, which can be a little concerning to someone who is not prepared for it. Chow puppies are born with pink tongue and it gets darken with age. The other distinctive characteristic of Chows is their straight hind legs, resulting in a stilted gait. Chows can also be distinguished by their dense double coat, which can either be smooth or rough.

History & Origin:


Chow Chow is one of the most ancient dog breed, it originated in Northern China more than 2000 years ago. Their existence can be dated by the potteries of Han dynasty (206 BC to 22 AD) in China. It is believed that Chow Chow came after crossing Tibetan Mastiffs and Samoyed, while others argue that it is the original ancestors of the Samoyed, Pomeranian, Norwegian Elkhound and Keeshond. The Chow was bred to be an all-around working dog, Chinese Emperors and merchants used them for hunting, pulling sled and guarding.

Colors:


Chow Chow dog breed comes in five colors red, black, cream, blue and cinnamon. Red is the most popular color. Do not overpay to any breeder for a Chow in any color other than red or do not go for a Chow in fancy colors such as lilac, silver, chocolate, white and champagne, as these are not standard breed colors.

Training:


Chows are very territorial and they can be very protective of their owners, so training and socializing them from an early age is very important. However, due to their stubborn and independent nature, they are bit difficult to train.

Living Environment:


Chows are not very active dog breed so they can adept to apartment lifestyle, as long as they receive their daily quota of exercise. When they are not exercised they become bit lethargic, overweight and cranky at times. They also prefer cold weather and are prone to heat strokes. So, if you live in hot humid climate, please do not adopt one.

Health:


When it comes to the health, Chow Chow is not a very sturdiest dog breed. Their most common health problem is elbow and hip dysplasia.

Grooming:


Chow Chow dog breed is seasonal heavy shredders and they need regular grooming. Chows have very thick dense coat which needs constant brushing. Chows with rough coat would need daily grooming, while smooth-coated ones can be groomed briefly once or twice a week. And, like any other dog breed keep trimming their nails, clean their ears regularly and brushing their teeth for overall health and hygiene.

Life Expectancy:


Chow Chow dog breed has a life expectancy of 10-12 years.

Is Chow Chow A Family Dog?


Fiercely loyal and protective of their owners, Chows can be a good dog for family. However, they need to be socialized from young age as they don’t like to be fussed over by children or strangers.
