About Bull mastiff Dog Breed:


Bull mastiffs are admired as guard dogs;however, it may come as a surprise to you that they are bred not to bite, but would pin their prey down and keep it there, till the time their owners arrive.Many of the diamond mines in South Africa use Bull mastiffs to guard their diamond mines. These massive guard dogs are also known as ‘Gentle Giants’.One would surely get the attention while walking the Bull mastiff on the street, as this breed has imposing size, with a full-grown Bull mastiff stands tall at an average of 27 inches and average weight around 130 pounds.

The most recognizable characteristic of a bull mastiff is its short, squared muzzle and broad, wrinkled head. Black nose and dark hazel colored eyes are more preferred in a bull mastiff dog.

Bull mastiff does not fit well with the dogs of same sex, especially when they are males. They cannot live with cats in the family, because of their high prey drive.

History & Origin:


Bull mastiffs originated in around 19th century in England, the breed is cross between Bulldog and English Mastiff. The breed was developed as a guard dog to track poachers, run in short sprints, and then pinning and holding the poacher without biting. Since making their way into US in 1920, these tendered hearted tough guys have made their name as guard dogs.


Colors:


Bull mastiff dog breed have a short coat which can be in red, fawn or brindle color. Their another distinguished characteristic is their large broad wrinkled head with a short black muzzle.

Training:


Bull mastiff are independent in nature but they are eager to please their owners, which helps in training. It is very important to adopt a special approach to train a Bull mastiff, as they can easily get bored by repetitive commands and actions.

Living Environment:


Bull mastiffs can easily fit into apartment lifestyle as they are not an active dog breed. Their laid back and calm nature makes them very easy to handle.However, they need daily exercise to keep their body in shape and minds active. It is also important not to over exercise them during the summer months, as they are prone to heat strokes.

Health:


Bull mastiff is generally a healthy dog breed, but they can suffer from tumors and like other heavy dog breed they are prone to cancer. They can also suffer from hip and elbow dysplasia.

Grooming:


Due to their short coat Bull mastiffs dog breed are easy to groom, however, one would need to keep dry towels handy to wipe off their excessive drool. With their modest grooming needs limited to brushing twice a week, to check their shedding, they are very easy to maintain. And, like any other dog breed keep trimming their nails and brushing their teeth for overall health and hygiene.

Life Expectancy:


Bull mastiffs dog breed have an average life span of 8-10 years.


Is Bull mastiff A Family Dog?


Despite their large size and menacing looks, Bull mastiffs have gentle temperament and are affectionate with family members. They feel happy to be part of a family and are very good with children.However, the bull mastiff's need to be socialized from an early age as this breed is suspicious of people outside the family.

It is very important to keep your Bull mastiff as a part of your family, and not in isolation, as they form a deep bond with their family. Bull mastiff kept in isolation is guaranteed to have bad behavior and potentially destructive due to its size.
