Obviously, Whiskey (my teetotaler dog) should also know what exactly my quick snack taste like, as I cannot turn down those big, begging eyes and wagging tail. However, one should be careful as nutrient rich human food cannot always be best dog food for your furry friend. It has been observed that some foods which are healthy for humans can be very toxic for your dog.
In this article we are not discussing what is the best dog food or the healthiest dog food for your four legged friend but we are listing some human food items which are a BIG NO
to feed your dogs.
Darker the chocolate or Coffee more harmful it can be for your dog:
Chocolates act as a toxin in dogs
and depending on the type and quality of chocolate this toxicity may differ, as a thumb rule darker the chocolate more harmful it can be for your dog.Chocolate products contain a toxic substance called methylxanthines, found in cocoa seeds, and when consumed by a dog it can cause diarrhea, vomiting, hyper activity, seizure or even death.
Alcohol could be deadly for your dog:
Cheers!! But find a human partner to share drinks, as alcohol could be deadly for your dog, even in small portion it can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, central nervous system depression, difficulty breathing and even death.
“Are you serious?”, “Don’t puppies drink their mother’s milk?” These are some upfront questions which would have arrived in your mind while looking at milk as not a serving option for your dog
. Generally, puppies have the lactase enzyme in abundance as it is used to breakdown lactose in their mother's milk while nursing, but when puppies have been weaned they produce less lactase and it becomes very difficult for them to digest milk (high fat especially).
Garlic and Onions:
If consumed in large amount these can lead to anemia, irritation in digestive system and can damage red blood cells.
Grapes and Raisins:
Even in small amounts grapes and raisins can lead to kidney failure in dogs.
Gum, Candy or Sugar can be extremely harmful for your dog:
Xylitol sweetener is sometimes found in gum or candy and can be extremely harmful for your dog as it may lead to liver failure. Also, the over-consumption of sugar can lead to obesity, dental problems and diabetes in dogs, much the same as in humans.
Raw egg increases the risk of salmonella bacteria.
Occasional potato chips won’t hurt, but consumption of salt in large quantity can lead to dehydration and high temperature in dogs.
Now you would wonder what is safe to share with your dog?
